The Perimenopause Edit: Introductory Guide

Perimenopause can affect far more than your menstrual cycle. Changes in sleep, mood, energy, weight, focus, hot flashes, vaginal health, digestion, and body composition can begin while periods are still relatively regular.

The Perimenopause Edit, written by Michelle Kavall FNP-C AFMCP, is designed to help women recognize what may be changing, understand what else should be considered, and have a more informed conversation with their medical provider.

Why Perimenopause Can Be Hard to Recognize

Perimenopause does not always begin with an obvious change in your period. Sleep may become lighter, anxiety may feel unfamiliar, recovery may take longer, or your body may begin responding differently to food, exercise, and stress.

Those symptoms can overlap with thyroid conditions, iron deficiency, sleep disorders, blood sugar changes, medications, and other health concerns. That is why a thoughtful evaluation looks beyond a single hormone level and considers your symptoms, history, cycle patterns, medications, lifestyle, and any testing that would actually change the plan.

There Is More Than One Approach to Treatment

Hormone therapy can be an important option for some women, but perimenopause care is not limited to hormones. Depending on your symptoms and medical history, the conversation may also include nonhormonal medications, nutrition, resistance training, sleep support, stress management, vaginal and urinary treatments, or care directed at a specific symptom.

The right plan is the one that fits your health history, priorities, symptoms, and goals.
